Mrs. Wallace's Dark Christmas cake

<li>1/2 lb. butter</li>
<li>1 1/2 cup sugar</li>
<li>5 eggs</li>
<li>3 cups flour (after sifting)</li>
<li>1/2 cup strawberry jam (may substitute part brandy)</li>
<li>1 tsp almond extract</li>
<li>1 tsp cinnamon</li>
<li>1 tsp each allspice, salt, soda</li>
<li>1/2 tsp clove powder</li>
<li>1 cup dried fruit ( pears, figs, apricots…)</li>
<li>1/2 cup chopped dates</li>
<li>1/2 cup seedless raisins</li>
<li>1 lb. currants</li>
<li>3/4 lb. seeded raisins</li>
<li>1 cup chopped dried black cherries</li>
<li>1 cup chopped nuts</li>
</ul>
<p>For 1 large cake (7 1/2" square). Line baking pan with parchment paper. Line baking pans with parchment paper. Prepare fruit and dredge with some of the flour. Cream butter and sugar well, add eggs one at a time beating well at each addition. Add extract and preserves then dry ingredients and fruit. (Reserve a little batter before adding the fruit to put on top of the cake to prevent the fruit drying out or burning.) bake in a 350 deg. oven for 20 min. then reduce to 275 deg. to finish baking 2 1/2 - 3 hrs.</p>
